PBX — VOIP — Telephony Engine

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Got an extra box? No… not me either, for this project I will build a dedicated box just for a PBX/IP Telephone system.

Asterisk is the world’s leading open source PBX, telephony engine, and telephony applications toolkit. Offering flexibility unheard of in the world of proprietary communications, Asterisk empowers developers and integrators to create advanced communication solutions…for free.”

After looking at the VOIP providers list looks like I have some more research to do, look don’t just trust any old VOIP provider… I’m not.

Ok, the goal for this project is to set up a reliable PBX telephony engine that will provide my family and friends in the US to communicate for free, you will have to buy the VOIP Phone yourself… not everything is free.

Ok Skype is free; see the whole idea behind creating a PBX/IP Telephone system is the challenge… Asterisk will be that. Hey… who knows I always have the option to connect my Soft PBX to a provider and resell calling time for example.

Building custom hardware, routers, wireless routers

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Ok first post right out of the box, all of my project notes will be posted here.

I stumbled across something that grabbed my attention and totally forgot what I was actually looking for. It seems there’s an open source firmware that can be uploaded to make that $60 router /wireless router into a $600 router.

DD-WRT is a third party developed firmware released under the terms of the GPL for many ieee802.11a/b/g/h/n wireless routers based on a Broadcom or Atheros chip reference design.

If you have a look in there online shop you can check out the products that they are featuring, like the Gateworks Cambria Platform GW2358-4 which is not the smallest, but most powerful wireless unit on the market.

When I start on this project I will post my findings here along with config and Tx output power.
